Glow from the Inside Out: Summer Skincare for Radiant Skin

June 9, 2025

nontoxic summer skincare

I used to think skincare was mostly about what you put on. But the longer I’ve walked through hard seasons – the kind that stretch you inside and out – the more I’ve realized healing and radiance aren’t just surface-level. They start with intention. And summer is the perfect time to be intentional with our time, our routines, and even our skincare. One of the best things you can do for your skin is switch to nontoxic summer skincare products that work with your body, not against it

We don’t often think about it this way, but what you slather on your skin matters. It matters for how you look today, but even more so for how your body functions and thrives years from now. That’s why I’ve slowly swapped out old, chemical-laden products for clean, nontoxic ones, and why I want to share some summer favorites that are keeping my skin happy, nourished, and glowing from the inside out.

Why Switching to Nontoxic Skincare Matters

Your skin is your body’s largest organ. And it doesn’t just protect you; it absorbs everything you feed it. Chemical sunscreens and synthetic skincare products often contain hormone disruptors, allergens, and harsh irritants. That might not sound like a big deal after one application, but over time it adds up. And the effects like inflammation, breakouts, premature aging, and even hormonal imbalances, can start to manifest in ways you never expected.

Making the switch to clean, safe skincare isn’t just about “looking good.” It’s about honoring your body and choosing health and longevity over convenience. That’s a mindset shift. and like most shifts worth making, it takes courage and a little intention.

My Favorite Nontoxic Summer Skincare Staples

Summer skin has different needs than winter skin. Gone are the dry, cold winds that warrant a thick, heavy cream. Come are the sweltering, balmy days when we still need moisture, but not in the same way. Those light skin tints that are all the rage are appropriate for the season, but many of them are laden with chemicals that aren’t nourishing your body – they’re toxifying it. However, there are other options.

These nontoxic summer skincare swaps are more than seasonal trends; they’re part of a long-term wellness mindset. These are the products I’m currently loving to keep my skin nourished and protected during the summer months

Root Pretty Pretty Booster + Booster Plus

Think of this as your one-stop summer skin shop. The Pretty Booster is a lightweight tinted primer and moisturizer packed with skin-loving ingredients like aloe, natural SPF protection, and nourishing botanicals. It evens out your skin tone without suffocating it—and the Plus version has even more skin-boosting ingredients. I love that it replaces multiple steps in my routine for an easy one-and-done, or that I can use to create a base for makeup. This falls under the low-tox category, but I don’t consider non-toxic.

Root Pretty Daylight Pore Minimizing Primer

I’ve only tested this a little, but it’s worth mentioning. The ingredient list checks out and it worked well under my makeup. This is your pretty standard sunscreen, and it applies like one and has a white cast, but it did what I wanted it to, which was give me extra protection under my foundation without making me oilier. The SPF has not been certified, so be aware of that if it’s something that’s important to you.

Find it here.

Lauren Brooke Illuminous Tinted Mineral Sunscreen

This is the real MVP of my clean sunscreen game – it doesn’t get much cleaner than this. Lauren Brooke’s formula offers broad-spectrum mineral SPF that blends beautifully, even on skin that’s not porcelain. No chalky residue, no questionable ingredients. Just sheer, healthy protection with a subtle, glowy tint that leaves you looking fresh and alive. This is my favorite tinted SPF to reach for when I want to look cute and pulled together.

Loulei Botanicals Revival Facial Oil

Yes, facial oil in the summer. Hear me out: when your skin is constantly exposed to sun, heat, and even air conditioning, it loses moisture quickly and can age faster. Loulei’s Revival Oil is one of my favorite finds in the world of nontoxic summer skincare. It’s featherlight, deeply nourishing, and packed with restorative oils like jojoba and sea buckthorn berry. It balances sebum production (so oily skin types don’t run away!) and helps repair damage from UV exposure. Think of it as your skin’s post-sun therapy session. Plus, it offers a little extra sun protection via the carrot root oil, though it’s unofficial since those terms are highly regulated. I like to use this under my Piper Blue makeup to help it go on smoother and offer some more protection throughout the day.

Earth Harbor Treasure Barrier Boost Glazing Milk

Summer calls for a lighter moisturizer that still does the work. Treasure is infused with seaweed and botanical extracts that deeply hydrate without clogging your pores. It layers well under sunscreen or makeup, and its natural ingredients help soothe sun-stressed skin. I’ve been impressed with how smooth and bouncy my skin feels after using this. Your skin will drink it up, especially after a day outdoors. It’s easy to get at Ulta or on their website.

Don’t Forget the Finishing Touches

Summer skin doesn’t stop at sunscreen and moisturizer. Here are a few more things I rotate in or recommend, especially when my skin needs a little extra TLC:

  • Aloe-based toner or hydrosol – for a quick cool-down and hydration refresh. Exfoliation once a week – using a gentle fruit enzyme mask or exfoliator keeps clogged pores and dullness at bay.
  • Tinted lip balm with SPF – because your lips need protection too.

Summer Skin Starts From Within

We can’t talk about radiant skin without talking about what’s going in your body. What you eat and how well you hydrate makes all the difference in how your skin looks and feels. For foods that give you that healthy glow, check out this blog post.

Eat the Rainbow (and Then Some)

Summer is fruit season, and your skin knows it. Load up on berries, melons, peaches, and citrus fruits rich in antioxidants and water content. These help your body fight inflammation, boost collagen, and keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

Hydration is Skincare

Don’t underestimate the power of water. Add electrolytes or lemon to your water if plain isn’t your thing, or make infused water with cucumber and mint. Your skin needs consistent hydration, especially when you’re sweating more than usual.

Coconut water is an excellent hydrator, due to naturally occurring electrolytes and a bit of natural sugar to enhance absorption. You can drink it plain or flavored, or blend it into smoothies and juices.

Final Thoughts: Radiance Is a Whole-Person Practice

If I’ve learned anything over the last few years, it’s this: healing and growth happen when we create the right conditions for them. Summer isn’t just about glowing skin. It’s about coming alive again. About thriving in the heat, even when things feel harsh or unforgiving.

So, switch out the harmful stuff. Treat your skin like it matters. Choose products that support your health, not sabotage it. Feed your body with vibrant foods. Hydrate your cells. And as always, trust the process.

Let your skin tell the story of someone who’s not just surviving, but blooming.
