I wish I could tell you that I always recognize a new season when it’s coming. That I feel excited and ready, standing on the edge of something new with unwavering faith and prefect clarity. But it doesn’t always look like that. It usually doesn’t look like that. Most of the time, a new season starts quietly, almost unnoticed, while I’m still wrestling with the weight of the old one.
The space between seasons can feel confusing. We’re not where we used to be, but we’re not quite to where we’re going, either. Things feel uncertain, and we can almost smell change in the air. Prayers feel repetative. Our faith feels stretched in unexpected ways. And yet, somewhere deep down, we sense that something is shifting.
In the last several years, I’ve come to realize that the in between space is not wasted; it’s preparation. God does some important work here, in the unseen places, in the moments when we feel like nothing is happening. He is preparing us for what’s next before we ever step into it. And faith can help prepare us for that new season.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, “To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.” If there is a season for everything, then there is also a season for preparation for everything. And that preparation often requires faith before it requires anything else.
Faith Before the Evidence
One of the hardest parts about stepping into a new season is that God rarely gives us the full picture upfront. We want clarity (well, I do). We want confirmation. We want a step-by-step plan that makes everything make sense. Or at the very least, we want to know the purpose up front – to know that the season is not wasted. But faith doesn’t work like that.
Hebrews 11:1 tells us, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the proof of things not seen.” Faith asks us to trust before we see results. It asks us to move before we feel ready. Faith calls us to believe that God is working, even when our circumstances suggest otherwise.
There have been times in my life where nothing around me looked like growth. Things felt stagnant or even regressive. I may even be going through one of those seasons now! But looking back on past seasons, I can see that God was building something in me that I would need later. Patience, endurance, discernment. A deeper dependence on Him. Those things don’t appear overnight; they’re cultivated in seasons where we are forced to trust without tangible proof.
Strength in the Waiting
Waiting is uncomfortable, there’s no way around that. It stretches us in ways that productivity and progress never could. But waiting is not the absence of movement. It’s a different kind of movement. It’s internal, spiritual, foundational.
“But those who wait for the Lord will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run and not be weary. They will walk and not faint.” (Isaiah 40:31) There is a renewal that only comes from God. It means not rushing ahead or forcing outcomes. Not trying to control every detail. Just waiting. And trusting that in the waiting, He is strengthening you for what’s ahead.
Sometimes we think we’re ready for the next season because we’re tired of the current one. But readiness isn’t about exhaustion; it’s about preparation. Are we prepared for the next season? Because God sees what we can’t see. He knows what the next season will require from us. And in His mercy, He prepares us accordingly.
Refining Through the Fire
Preparation is not always easy. It’s not always comfortable. Sometimes it’s refinement, and refinement can be painful. 1 Peter 1:6-7 says, ” In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while, if necessary, you have been distressed by various trials, so that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold which perishes though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” There is a purpose to the fire. It burns away what cannot go with you into the next season. It exposes what needs to be healed. It strengthens what needs to endure.
I’m not sure if any of us would willingly choose the refining process, but there is something sacred about it. It strips away the unnecessary and leaves behind something stronger, purer and more aligned with who God is calling us to be. And while that may feel like loss in the moment, it’s actually preparation. You’re being shaped for something you can’t yet fully see.
Learning to Trust God’s Timing
2 Peter 3:8 reminds us, “But don’t forget this one thing, beloved: that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.” God is not bound by our sense of urgency. Every closed door, every delay, every moment that feels like it’s taking too long is part of a bigger picture that we can’t fully comprehend. And while it may feel like we’re being held back, we are actually being held in place for a reason. There’s protection in His timing and wisdom in His pacing. There’s love in the way He withholds certain things until we are ready to receive them.
Becoming Who You Need to Be
We often focus on what the next season will bring. The opportunities, the blessings, the breakthroughs. But God is concerned with who we’re becoming along the way.
Romans 5:3-4 tells us, “And not only this, but we also rejoice in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope.” Every trial is producing something in you; they are shaping your character. Every moment of uncertainty is deepening your reliance on God. The next season of your life may require a version of you that is stronger, wiser, and more grounded in faith. And that version of you is being formed right now.
Holding Onto Hope
At the end of the day, preparation requires hope. Hope that this season is not the end, that God is still working, that something good is coming, even if you can’t see it yet.
God hasn’t forgotten you. He hasn’t overlooked your prayers or dismissed your pain. He’s not indifferent to your waiting; He’s preparing you. And while you may not understand every part of the process, you can trust the One who is leading you through it. So if you find yourself in that in between space, where things feel uncertain and your heart feels stretched, take comfort in this: you’re not stuck, you’re being prepared.
Hold onto faith, even when it feels fragile. God is preparing you for a new season. Keep seeking Him, even when He feels far away. Keep moving forward, even if it’s only one small step at a time. A new season is coming. And when it arrives, you will see that every moment of waiting, every tear, every prayer, and every act of faith was shaping you into someone ready to step into it.
