The word “clean” is so buzzy right now. Clean beauty, clean skincare, clean products. I mean, “clean girl” is a whole aesthetic – glowing skin, green juice, minimal, but perfect makeup that looks effortlessly polished. Easy, right?
Except it’s not. It still pushes us toward perfection. And the older I get, the more exhausting it gets chasing perfection. If you’re over 30, you might feel the same way. Who wants to spend all their extra energy on fake wellness? Especially when we need wellness to be real.
So this isn’t about chasing an aesthetic. (Or maybe it is, and that’s ok). It’s more about creating a life that feels clean. We want clear minds, nourished bodies, and regulated nervous systems, all while keeping up with the daily grind. Here’s how to approach having a clean girl summer with grace and honesty, sans the overbearing pressure.
Nourish Your Body Like Your Life Depends on It
There was a time when I treated food like it was a problem to solve. (Who am I kidding, I still do this sometimes.) It was something to restrict, control, or perfect. A tool in my toolbox to owning the kind of perfection I was chasing. Now I look at it more like the support it is. A foundational pillar not only to my health, but to my happiness.
A clean girl summer starts with nourishment, rather than deprivation. It starts with eating in a way that stabilizes our energy levels instead of sending them on a roller coaster. I’m not saying we can’t indulge, but we should primarily focus on building support for our bodies, with some treats sprinkled in. Protein at every meal, healthy satiating fats, fruits and vegetables that add color and micronutrients to our plates – these are what bring life to our tired bodies. It doesn’t have to be complicated.
Hydration is a piece of this puzzle that is often overlooked. Not just drinking water but making sure it gets into the cells. Add minerals if needed. Pay attention to how you feel when you’re well hydrated versus when you are not. You can drink bottles of water and still be dehydrated if your electrolytes are imbalanced. Be consistent with your water intake; small sips throughout the trumps guzzling a liter in the afternoon when you’re feeling parched.
Clean Beauty that Lets You Breathe
At this stage of life, I don’t want a 12-step skincare routine that feels like a chore. I’m all about minimalism that is still effective. I want products that support my skin without the overwhelm, and without having to spend a fortune. I want to let my skin breathe and exist without constantly trying to fix something. Although it does seem like I’m constantly trying to fix something, courtesy of skinfluencing.
Clean beauty, for me, means simplifying and paying attention to ingredients. Choosing products that don’t irritate my skin or disrupt my hormones. It also means letting go of the pressure to look flawless at all times.
Skin changes in our 30s – at least for most of us. Hormones shift and stress begins to show more readily. Instead of fighting our own bodies, we can work with them. Gentle cleansers (my preference is for oil cleansing), a hydrating moisturizer, and a good sunscreen are really all we need. These are the basics, anything else is a bonus.
Don’t forget to appreciate what you have. Beauty is fleeting; we’re only young for a while. We can care for our appearance from a place pf self-rejection or from a place of self-respect. One is draining, the other is sustainable. Choose wisely.
Regulate Your Nervous System, Not Just Your Schedule
We can eat clean, work out, and follow all the right routines, but if our nervous systems are constantly overloaded, our bodies might still feel off. Living in a constant state of stress can show up anywhere. In our digestion, our skin, our sleep, our mood…and no amount of green juice can fix that on its own. Believe me, I tried. I found this out the hard way when my nervous system still crashed despite my daily green smoothies.
A clean girl summer means learning how to feel safe in our own bodies.
Start small. Slow down your mornings, even if it’s just for 10 minutes. Sit in silence. Pray. Breathe deeply without rushing to the next thing on your list. This lets your body know it doesn’t have to be in survival mode the moment you wake up.
Pay attention to your triggers – the things that spike your anxiety or drain your energy. You don’t have to eliminate everything overnight, or at all. But you can start creating space to relax. Give yourself permission to create boundaries that keep you safe, happy, and relaxed.
Movement helps, too, but don’t make it a punishment. Start walking outside or add a stretching routine to your afternoon. Pretty much anything that tells your body it’s not under attack will work. You’re allowed to move in a way that feels good instead of forcing intense workouts on an already overstressed body.
And if you’ve been carrying a lot on your shoulders, holding it in, find a way to release it. Journal, go to therapy, talk to someone you trust. Or just sit with God and pray, being honest about where you are. Regulation isn’t about suppressing feelings; it’s about processing them safely. Give them space, then give them somewhere to go.
Wellbeing that Goes Beyond the Surface
True wellbeing isn’t something you can fake. It’s put together piece by piece, in the small, unseen choices we make every day. Wellbeing is choosing to rest when our bodies are asking for it, even when our minds say we should push through. It’s turning down the noise and the constant input and being still enough to hear our own thoughts again.
For me, faith is a huge part of this. Not a polished, feel-good kind of faith. An honest, messy, faith that feels like it’s the last thread I’m hanging onto. Faith is the knowledge that even when I feel uncertain, a path is still being made for me.
Protect your peace this summer. Be mindful of what you consume – not just in food, but in media, conversations, and environments. Everything you take in has an effect on you.
Create small, but consistent routines that bring you back to yourself. Get outside in the morning for some sunlight. Create an evening wind-down routine. Find moments of gratitude. Even if they’re small, these glimmers add up.
Final Thoughts
A clean girl summer for women over 30 isn’t about becoming someone new, or someone more polished or put-together. It’s about returning to yourself. Letting go of what’s unnecessary and holding onto what sustains you. It’s slower, more intentional living that ushers in a sense of calm.
You don’t need to have it all figured out to start. You don’t need a flashy guide or influencer to follow. You just need to take one step toward caring for yourself in a way that feels right for you. Eat a little better, rest a little more, breathe a little deeper. Trust God, even if your faith feels fragile.
There is still so much beauty to enjoy during this season. Let this be the summer you stop striving and start supporting yourself. Let it be clean in ways that matter most.
