Makeup Matters: Should You Make the Switch?

July 14, 2025

Non-toxic makeup

Most of us didn’t think about the dangers lurking in that little tube of lipstick the first time we snuck into our mothers’ vanities to play in her makeup. We just wanted to look beautiful. Even now, when we think about beauty, most of us imagine radiant skin, glowing confidence and that perfect shade of lipstick that sits just right against our skin tone.

But what if those products were hurting us?

Let’s explore the hidden dangers of conventional makeup and why transitioning to non-toxic beauty products is so important. As someone who’s passionate about holistic living, I’ve made the switch because I believe beauty should never come at the cost of our health. It should build health, not detract from it.

The Hidden Dangers in Your Makeup Bag

Every day, the average woman uses around 12 personal care products, containing more than 100 unique chemicals. That might not seem alarming, until you realize that many of those ingredients are linked to endocrine disruption, cancer, reproductive harm, and allergic reactions.

Unlike food or drugs, cosmetics are not as tightly regulated in the US. In fact, the FDA does not require pre-market approval for cosmetics and has banned or restricted only about 30 ingredients. In contrast, the EU has banned over 1,300.

I’m not here to fearmonger or tell you what you should or should not use. That is never my goal. I’m just here to shed some light on the darkness of the beauty industry.

What’s in Traditional Makeup?

Here are some of the harmful ingredients commonly found in mainstream makeup products, but this is far from all of them:

  • Parabens (methylparaben, propylparaben): Used as preservatives, these mimic estrogen (and thereby block our estrogen receptors) in the body and have been linked to breast cancer and hormonal imbalance.
  • Phthalates: Often hidden under the word “fragrance,” phthalates disrupt the endocrine system and can affect fertility and reproductive development.
  • Talc: Frequently contaminated with asbestos, talc has been associated with ovarian cancer and lung issues.
  • Formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (like DMDM hydantoin): Known carcinogens and skin irritants.
  • Heavy metals (lead, cadmium, arsenic): Found in many lipsticks and eyeliners, these metals can accumulate in the body over time, impacting neurological function and hormonal health.
  • Synthetic fragrances and dyes: Often made from petroleum-derived chemicals, these can trigger allergies, migraines, and skin conditions like eczema. Not to mention, fragrance is a loophole term that is used to include hidden chemicals that they do not have to specify. It is the “natural flavors” of the cosmetic world.

Why Even Small Amounts Matter

One common misconception is that “the dose makes the poison.” But the truth is many of these toxic ingredients are bio accumulative, meaning they build up in the body over time. Not only that, but you might be getting much larger doses than you realize, because chances are, you’re not just using that one product with that one harmful ingredient. Small, daily exposures add up. This is especially concerning when it comes to the endocrine system, which operates on delicate hormonal signals. Small disruptions can lead to a ripple effect across the thyroid, ovaries, adrenals, and more. No wonder so many women are struggling with endocrine issues.

Hormones & Makeup: What You Need to Know

Women are particularly vulnerable because our hormonal systems are so complex and highly sensitive. Exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals in makeup has been linked to:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles
  • Increased PMS symptoms
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Infertility
  • Early puberty
  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

Some of these are diagnoses I have received myself. And let’s not forget that pregnant and breastfeeding women are at even greater risk, as many toxins can cross the placenta or enter breastmilk and can affect the developing baby.

My Personal Shift to Clean Beauty

My journey into non-toxic makeup began when I started noticing that the products I had been using for years were doing more harm than good. My skin was breaking out, my cycles were off, and I was plummeting deeper and deeper into chronic illness. Don’t get me wrong, a lot of this was due to issues outside of my beauty products. But I did discover that toxic build-up inside my body was a contributing factor, so I started making an effort to ditch toxic products where I could. That included makeup.

I began researching ingredients and was shocked by what I found. That’s when I made the commitment to detox my beauty routine, just like I was detoxing my pantry and my home.

Two brands that have been game-changers for me are:

Lauren Brooke Cosmetiques

Lauren Brooke’s mission aligns beautifully with holistic living. Their products are:

  • 100% non-toxic
  • Certified cruelty-free
  • Made with organic, nourishing ingredients
  • Free of parabens, synthetic fragrances, and heavy metals

Their cream foundation is one of my favorite foundations ever, clean or not. It gives me that glow I had with my traditional makeup products, and it competes with them as far as performance goes. It lasts all day and doesn’t depend on those “forever chemicals” to do so. I also love their Illuminous Tinted SPF and their blush sticks. Their ingredients list reads more like a skincare formula full of healing oils, extracts, and botanicals. I’ve been so impressed with them that I became an affiliate so I can offer you a code if you’re interested in trying them out.

Bonus: I just received their finishing powder to try, and I kid you not, this is the first loose powder I’ve ever decidedly reached for. I’m not a fan of powder, but this one sits well on my skin and doesn’t have the kind of kick back that makes me wheeze.

Piper Blue

Piper Blue is another favorite of mine, but their formulation is a little bit different. Their complexion products are all cream based (except for the setting powder) and come in a customizable, easy-to-use palette. If you’re a fan of Seint makeup but don’t like the ingredient list, you should check out Piper Blue. They offer such a wide range of colors, and they are frequently working on new products. Piper Blue is:

  • 100% non-toxic
  • Made in the USA
  • Third-party tested
  • Free of parabens, synthetic fragrances, and heavy metals

How to Transition to Non-Toxic Makeup

Making the switch doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Start slow with the easiest things to replace. Here are a few steps to guide you:

1. Start with the Products You Use Most

Focus on what goes on your skin every day, like foundation or moisturizer. Pick one to start, and when you’ve got that down, move on to the next one.

2. Learn to Read Labels

Familiarize yourself with harmful ingredients (you can use a clean beauty app like Think Dirty or EWG’s for help with this). If you can’t pronounce it and it’s not a botanical, it might be worth a second look.

3. Use Up What You Have

You don’t need to throw everything away at once unless you want to. But as you finish products, replace them with cleaner alternatives. Finding the right makeup can be difficult; focus on finding something new while you still have some product left to fall back on.

4. Support Ethical Brands

Brands like Lauren Brooke and Piper Blue are not only healthier, they’re eco-conscious, cruelty-free, and committed to transparency. There are other brands I haven’t gotten around to trying, like Araza and A’del, but whichever brand you decide to go with, make sure they align with your health goals and priorities.

A wonderful way to try new brands is to sign up for LG Natural’s monthly subscription boxes. I’ve found some of my favorite products this way! Use the code HONEYANDGRACE for 15% off your order!

The Bigger Picture: Beauty with Purpose

Non-toxic makeup isn’t just a personal wellness decision, it’s an environmental and ethical one. The chemicals we wash off our faces end up in our water systems, potentially harming wildlife and ecosystems. The beauty industry’s reliance on animal testing, plastic packaging, and unethical sourcing practices makes clean beauty an act of sustainability and compassion for all of creation.

When you choose non-toxic makeup, you’re sending a powerful message: that your health matters, your environment matters, and that you’re not willing to compromise.

Final Thoughts

Our skin is our body’s largest organ, and what we put on it matters just as much as what we put in our mouths. The shift toward non-toxic beauty isn’t just a trend; it’s a return to integrity and a commitment to a brighter future.

I encourage you to explore the world of clean beauty and see how good it feels to align your makeup bag with your values. Your body will thank you.

Have you made the switch to non-toxic makeup yet? Are there brands you’d like me to try? Let me know in the comments?
